Our Classes

  • Straight from Rio de Janeiro, pianist and educator Ana Carvalho leads our Brazilian Jazz Combo with infectious energy and authenticity. The group explores the rich traditions of samba, bossa nova, and modern Brazilian jazz, blending rhythmic vitality with lyrical improvisation. Under Ana’s guidance, students dive into the heart of Brazilian music—learning how to groove, interact, and perform in an ensemble setting inspired by Brazil’s most vibrant musical landscapes.

  • Step into the world of jazz creativity with Mark Massey — legendary pianist, composer, and educator whose artistry has graced stages worldwide. In this class, students explore the art of improvisation through blues, standards, and contemporary jazz, guided by Mark’s decades of professional experience.

With a focus on listening, interaction, and personal expression, Mark helps each student unlock their unique voice on their instrument while deepening their understanding of harmony, rhythm, and form. Whether you’re just beginning your improvisational journey or looking to refine advanced skills, this class offers a rare opportunity to study directly with one of Southern California’s jazz masters.

  • Hone your stage skills with Tom Cunningham, acclaimed trumpeter and bandleader known for his dynamic performances across Southern California. This class focuses on the essential craft of live performance — from ensemble communication and stage presence to building confidence under the spotlight.

Students will rehearse jazz standards and contemporary repertoire in a supportive combo setting, learning how to balance individual improvisation with group dynamics. With Tom’s seasoned guidance, you’ll gain practical tools for preparing, rehearsing, and delivering performances that connect with audiences.

Perfect for players ready to take their musicianship from the practice room to the stage, this class offers an authentic performance experience led by one of OC’s premier jazz trumpeters.

  • At the heart of SoCal Jazz Academy is the Repertory Ensemble, the flagship class founded and directed by Dr. Karim Yengsep. This ensemble embodies the school’s original vision — a space where dedicated musicians come together to study, rehearse, and perform the masterworks of the jazz tradition.

Students dive into the repertoire of jazz legends, from swing and bebop to modern classics, while developing the ensemble skills, improvisational language, and professional discipline needed to thrive as performing artists. Under Dr. Yengsep’s leadership, the Repertory Ensemble has become both a training ground and a showcase, representing the Academy at performances across Orange County.

As the program on which the school was built, the Repertory Ensemble remains our premier opportunity for students to grow, collaborate, and carry forward the legacy of jazz.

  • Led by Ken Song, virtuoso guitarist and first-call musician on the Southern California jazz scene, the Standards Combo is where students immerse themselves in the timeless jazz repertoire. From bebop classics to great American songbook favorites, the group develops fluency in standard forms while sharpening improvisation, comping, and ensemble interaction.

With Ken’s expert guidance, students learn the subtle art of phrasing, chord voicings, and rhythmic feel that bring standards to life on stage. Known for his impeccable technique and versatility, Ken draws on his wealth of professional experience to mentor players of all instruments in creating polished, expressive performances.

The Standards Combo is the perfect setting for musicians who want to deepen their mastery of the jazz tradition while performing alongside one of OC’s most in-demand guitarists.
